Shell Regatta 2006 - Race Rules - Posted: August 25, 2006 - 12:59 PM Quote and reply
The race will be operated on a 'cruising in company basis'.

Entrants in the race/cruise will adhere to the international regulations for preventing collisions at sea.

Racing rules will not apply with one exception. Yachts are allowed to luff gently as long as ample warning is given and all contact is avoided.

The start will be at the Kyles of Bute approximately between Buttock Point and Eilean Dubh. The start line will be marked by a bouy at one end and the committee boat (David) at the other. It may not be a windward start. No luffing before the start.

The course will be shown on the chart copy handed out at the Skipper's Briefing (this chart is NOT to be used for navigation and should be disposed of at the end of the regatta!). Skippers will be asked to record their time at certain positions in case of a shortened race.

If the race is shortened due to too little or too much wind then a broadcast will be made on the regatta VHF working channel.

The finish line will be across the approaches to Tarbert harbour, details to be announced at the skipper's briefing. Record your time when crossing the line!!

SOLAS states that all skippers must have a passage plan. Skippers are responsible for the safety of the vessel and the crew and must ensure safe practises are followed.

The Regatta organisers will inform Clyde Coastguard of the Saturday race plans and provide them with a list of boat names and call signs. The coast guard will also be informed that all boats will plan to return to Largs Yacht Haven by Sunday pm. The committee boat will inform the coastguard of the completion of the event on Saturday once all boats are moored up in Lamlash. Sunsail will contact the coastguard to confirm all boats have returmed on Sunday.

Spinnakers are allowed.

RYA guidance notes for passage planning:

WEATHER - check the weather forecast and get regular updates while you're out on the water.
TIDES - check the tidal predictions for your trip and make sure you take them into account.
LIMITATIONS OF YOUR BOAT - is your boat up to the trip? Have you enough safety equipment and stores on board?
CREW - take into account the experience and physical ability of your crew.
NAVIGATIONAL DANGERS - make sure that you are familiar with any navigational dangers you may encounter on your trip. This generally means checking an up to date chart and pilot book or almanac .
CONTINGENCY PLAN - take the unexpected into account and have a plan for what you can do if something goes wrong. This includes bolt holes or ports of refuge. Don't be over reliant on your GPS set and make sure you can navigate to safety should it or your power source fail .
INFORMATION ASHORE - tell someone ashore where you're going and what your plans are.
