Sail from Crinan

St Kilda at nightIt was a great week, and we did get to St Kilda which we set out to do but this week had its darker moment.

I often think that looking back at why things happen usually produces a clear causal thread. Not always, granted. But at least when it does we can learn and avoid the same mistakes again and this week produced some gems.

We had planned to sail from Crinan on the Scottish west coast.

There was a week set aside for collecting 'qualifying passages' and for sailing to St Kilda, weather permitting. The idea really was to just keep sailing including two or three nights.

I left Aberdeen early on the Friday so that I could have the boat, a Tartan 41 chartered from the marina near Crinan, all handed over and ready to go by mid afternoon. Shortly after I'd achieved that, Jackie, Dave and Dave's daughter Nicola arrived with the food for the week. We loaded up the food and our kit and prepared to leave the marina so that we could lock out of the canal into the sea by the last locking of the day at 6.00pm.

We made it in time and moored off the Crinan hotel and waited for our last two crew members to arrive. We brought the boat alongside the redundant lock and picked up Jonathan and Margaret at about 8.00pm. It was getting dark by the time the crew, most of whom had never sailed together before, had completed the introductions over a dinner of spicy chicken fajitas.
