Night Sail to Tobermoray

Actually, Dave, Nicola and Jackie has sailed together, as had Jonathan and I. Also, we had enough combined and individual experience to allow four of us to rotate the skippering. It fell to me to get the ball rolling and as skipper for the first leg, I decided that we should leave immediately after dinner and do a night sail to Tobermoray.

That would place us in a good position in the morning to take advantage of the forecast south-westerly and make possible a sail to St Kilda via the Sound of Bara. So we got ourselves sorted out, set up our watches and cast off. Navigating the Sound of Luing kept us amused for a while, after which the off-watchers went to get some sleep.

We arrived at Tobermoray after a night of sail-motor-sail-motor-sail in time for an early breakfast tied up at the Cal Mac jetty. The forecast was still good for sailing straight out to St Kilda so we tidied up, switched skippers and under Jonathan's command, we set off for the Sound of Bara barely an hour later. The sail to Bara was uneventful and it was fun navigating through the sound with its multiple transits in the early afternoon. As we headed out into the Atlantic the wind began to back and strengthen which in turn wound up a palpable swell.

Things seemed to be going well until the swell began to take its toll on me, then Margaret, then Jonathan. As the wind backed further into the south-east, shelter at St Kilda seemed the quickest solution to our seasicknss. So we continued, albeit with several hours to run. Dave, Nicola and Jackie were sailing the boat while the rest of us attempted to deal with our seasickness or get some rest.
