The last morning (Monday) showed more promise and we left Colonsay at 08:00 with a 10kt northerly breeze under a cloudless sky. This gave us a beam reach towards the Gulf of Corryvreckan, however true to form the wind gradually decreased and died altogether about 5 miles west of the entrance. We had no option but to start the trusty engine in order to make the passage at slack water or at the start of the ebb. It was during this time that we spotted a Minke whale however, despite hanging around for a while, it didn’t re-surface. Corryvreckan itself was quite benign, what with calm conditions, neap tides and brilliant sunshine. So benign in fact that the whole crew (except the author of course) decided to jump over the stern in order that they can claim to have swum there! Some underestimated the water temperature and jumped out quicker than they jumped in! Other hardier souls stayed in and got a tow with the floating safety line streamed astern. With the start of the ebb the gentle tow was giving them 5 knots over the ground.
