We got under way about 0830 but the wind practically disappeared by the time we cleared Ardminish Bay. Motoring south, we rounded Cara Island before setting course for the Sound of Islay and setting the sails more in hope than anything else. We were in no hurry as we did not want to arrive at the south entrance to the Sound until about 15:00, when the north-going stream started. However we seemed to be able to drift along at about 2 knots in the sunshine and have a bacon butty brunch in comfort. Indeed the wind later swung round to the south so the skipper decided to impress the novices by flying the spinnaker. This lasted about half an hour before the wind slowly headed us so the sails were dropped and we motored north through the sound of Islay passing Port Askaig with its RNLI lifeboat station, established in 1934, and imposing Dunlossit House above. Caol Isla and Bunnahabhain distilleries were then passed to port before Rhuvall Lighthouse marked the north end of the Sound.
