Back on board at the ‘planning’ session it was agreed that there was a possibility of completing a clockwise circumnavigation of the island in the time available, albeit with some long days sailing. Two crew volunteered to get up early next morning. After a peaceful but rainy night, we slipped moorings at 0630 on 4th February. Inside the harbour it was cool with a hint of wind promising a push up to the north. How wrong was that! As soon as Barbarella’s nose poked out of the harbour the wind was found to be from the NE at 25knots, gusting 30. Wave height was in the region of 3 metres. This only goes to show what a superb natural harbour Soller is. There was no choice but to turn back towards Dragonera and we had a lively dead run under ˝ genoa only. Lively enough to induce a touch of mal-de-mer!

Approaching Dragonera from the northOnce past the Dragonera channel the wind and sea dropped dramatically and Kevin produced a hearty Spag Bol for lunch before setting all sail for a pleasant beam reach towards Puerto Portals, our chosen stop for the night on the western side of Palma Bay. Rounding Cabo de Cal Figuera into Palma Bay we we discovered there were no spare berths at Portals, so we altered course towards Palma. Soon it was decided to head back to Can Pastilla, Barbarella’s home port, which was a €10 taxi ride from the fleshpots of Palma rather than the €40 or so it would cost to overnight there. After a tricky cross-wind berthing manoeuvre (hampered by dinghies tacking around us in the marina) we settled in for the night. Restaurant of choice that night was Fred’s Bistro just outside the marina gate, and run by a pair of Germans. The food was robust, typical German meat & potato fare.
